SSgt. Bob Lay has been playing the guitar and entertaining people since his early high school days when he performed at community functions and on local radio. He served in the Marine Corps for 22 years from 1953 to 1975, and was among some of the first Marines to serve in Vietnam in 1964. He returned to Da Nang, Vietnam for a second tour in 1968. During his long career as a Marine and part time entertainer Bob Lay and his growing family moved to various cities throughout the country, and he appeared on television and at many service and civilian clubs both in the United States and overseas. Bob Lay was born in the small town of Fulton, Kansas in 1935. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Bob and his family moved back to Kansas. He attended college at Pittsburg State University where he completed his BSED and MA in Communications. Afterwards he began a career fighting for civil rights when he started working for the Kansas Human Rights Commission. He worked his way up in the KHRC for 18 years retiring as the agency's Executive Director in 1997. In 1998 the Governor of Kansas appointed him to serve as a commissioner with the agency. He retired for the last time in 2000 and moved to settle in Hillsboro, Oregon. Bob and his wife, Delores, have raised five children, four of whom served as active duty Marines. He now spends his time with his children and grandchildren, and continues playing his guitar, writing songs, playing in jam sessions and tinkering with old guitars. Bob is also writing a book of memoirs about his life and service in the Marine Corps.
